Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship

This program is designed for high school students who are wanting to pursue a career in the Automotive Service Technician trade. Interested students first take Mechanics 10 before enrolling in Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship 20 and 30.  In the apprenticeship program, students are introduced to a variety of tools, practical skills, and safety considerations while preparing for workplace expectations and further apprenticeship training. Through a combination of theory learning and hands-on lab experiences, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to meet Alberta's first period Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship standards.

The Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship program covers the same material that is taught in post-secondary institutions. Concepts are taught by a teacher who is also a Red Seal journeyperson Automotive Service Technician with the credentials, expertise, and technical knowledge to deliver a post-secondary curriculum in a high school setting.

By the end of this program, students can expect to earn a total of 17 thirty-level high school credits. After successful completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to take the first period apprenticeship exam. Upon passing the exam and completing an additional 1530 hours of on-the-job experience, students will achieve second-year recognition as an Automotive Service Technician, which provides a significant head start in the industry.
